FPL Chips Guide 2026/27: Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain

By Best FPL Transfers · Updated 17 October 2026

The short answer: in 2026/27 you get eight chips, a Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain in each half of the season. The first set must be played before the Gameweek 19 deadline (13:30 GMT, Saturday 2 January 2027) or it's lost; a fresh set arrives for Gameweeks 20 to 38. Only one chip can be played per gameweek.

The four chips at a glance

Chip What it does When
Wildcard Unlimited, permanent transfers for the gameweek, including any you've already made GW2–19
GW20–38
Free Hit Unlimited transfers for one gameweek; your squad goes back to how it was at the next deadline GW2–19
GW20–38
Bench Boost Points from your four bench players count too GW1–19
GW20–38
Triple Captain Your captain scores triple points instead of double GW1–19
GW20–38

When do FPL chips reset?

After Gameweek 19. Every chip from the first set has to be played before the Gameweek 19 deadline. Anything unused is lost: it can't be carried into the second half. From Gameweek 20 you get a fresh Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain for the rest of the season.

That makes the first half "use it or lose it". If you're approaching Gameweek 19 with chips left, plan which gameweeks they go in rather than letting them expire.

Wildcard

A Wildcard lets you make as many transfers as you like in a gameweek without points hits, and the changes are permanent. It also covers any transfers you made earlier that gameweek before activating it.

When it's worth it: when several players need changing at once, for example a run of injuries, players losing their place, or a big swing in fixtures that your team isn't set up for. One bad week isn't a reason to wildcard; three or four players you'd sell anyway is.

Free transfers: your banked free transfers are kept when you play a Wildcard, but you don't gain a new one that week.

Free Hit

A Free Hit gives you unlimited transfers for one gameweek only. At the next deadline your squad reverts to exactly how it was before.

When it's worth it: in blank gameweeks, when several Premier League teams don't play and you'd otherwise field fewer than 11 players, and in double gameweeks, to field as many players with two matches as possible without damaging your long-term team. Our fixture ticker shows doubles and blanks for every club.

Rules to know:

  • It can't be played in Gameweek 1.
  • You can't play your first Free Hit in Gameweek 19 and your second in Gameweek 20: no back-to-back Free Hits across the reset.
  • Like the Wildcard, it keeps your banked free transfers, though you don't gain a new one that week.

Bench Boost

With a Bench Boost, the points scored by your four bench players count towards your total for that gameweek, so all 15 players score.

When it's worth it: when your whole squad has good fixtures, ideally a double gameweek where most of your 15 play twice. A Bench Boost on a bench of non-playing budget players is wasted, so it's often paired with a Wildcard a week or two before, to build a bench that actually plays. Use our predicted points to see which bench players are expected to return.

Triple Captain

Your captain's points are tripled instead of doubled for one gameweek.

When it's worth it: on a reliable, nailed-on attacker with either two matches in a double gameweek or an especially kind home fixture. The extra multiplier only pays off if your captain actually returns, so the safest choice usually beats a gamble.

Chips and free transfers in 2026/27

  • You get one free transfer each gameweek and can bank up to five.
  • Every extra transfer costs 4 points, unless you're playing a Wildcard or Free Hit.
  • Playing a Wildcard or Free Hit doesn't wipe your banked transfers: four banked before a Free Hit is still four after it.
